OSI Process Steps

What to Expect

A thorough current assessment at the closest OSI Clinic is performed in order to determine clients’ specific needs and requirements. Any past assessments and or treatments are discussed as well.

The OSI Clinic team involves clients in setting wellness goals and making treatment decisions. Clients have the opportunity to engage in treatment that is both evidence-based and tailored to individual needs. Clients are to remain in active treatment and receive follow-up care for as long as clinically necessary. If clients authorize the OSI Clinic to do so, we will collaborate with and support family physicians and any other health professionals involved in a client’s care.

Our services are also offered through TeleHealth so clients and their family or support networks can continue receiving treatment in the comfort of their community.

Assessment and Treatment

Not all OSI Clinic assessment overviews are identical, but they provide the highest quality of assessment, treatment, and support services to clients.All assessments for OSIs are comprehensive, thorough and confidential. There are a number of different steps in the assessment process.

Step 1: Intake

Once the OSI Clinic receives a referral, an intake coordinator reviews the referral for appropriateness and ensures all documentation is complete.The intake coordinator may call or meet with the client and/or the referral source for additional information including:

  • The reason for the referral to the OSI Clinic from the client’s perspective;
  • Brief history of professional service (i.e. deployments; military or policing service);
  • Social support, past and present professional help;
  • History of the client’s illness;
  • Current main problems;
  • Current stressors;
  • Client’s expectations and client’s availability.

Once the referral is accepted, the Clinic contacts the client to make an appointment and notifies the client’s referral source that an OSI Clinic appointment has been booked.

Step 2: Assessment

Once the referral is accepted the client participates in an OSI assessment. If a diagnosis is required a psychological and/or psychiatric assessment is completed. The assessment serves a dual purpose. It confirms a mental health diagnosis and also helps determine what type of therapy is to be used by the therapist. An additional assessment for treatment purposes may be completed by other team members and the results of all assessments are shared with clients and clients are encouraged to ask questions.

A comprehensive assessment is necessary if clients have submitted an application for a pension award through Veteran Affairs Canada.

Step 3: Treatment Plan Development

Once an OSI assessment is complete, the clinical team meets with the client to develop a treatment/service plan that best fits the client’s needs. A treatment plan is always made in collaboration with a client.

The client’s care is directed to the most appropriate health care member(s) on the team.

All necessary arrangements are made including appointments or other specific details.

A meeting with family members, with a client’s consent, may occur before treatment begins in some situations.

Is there a cost?

There is no cost to the individual or family members, for clients authorized to access the OSI Clinic.
